La Basilique de l'Assomption d'Aglona est un joyau architectural et spirituel en Lettonie. Construite entre 1768 et 1780 dans le style baroque italien, cette église impressionnante a été consacrée en 1800. Elle occupe une place importante dans l'histoire religieuse de la région, ayant servi de siège épiscopal de Riga de 1920 à 1924.
Reconnue comme l'un des huit sanctuaires internationaux majeurs par le Saint-Siège, la basilique attire des milliers de pèlerins chaque année, particulièrement lors de la fête de l'Assomption de Marie le 15 août. Elle accueille environ 300 000 fidèles lors de ses événements religieux.
En 1980, à l'occasion de son 200e anniversaire, le Pape Jean-Paul II lui a accordé le titre prestigieux de « Basilica minoris ». Le pontife a d'ailleurs visité personnellement le site en septembre 1993. Cette basilique lettone demeure un haut lieu de pèlerinage catholique et un témoignage remarquable du patrimoine religieux européen.

« Construction of the present church, which is in the Italian Baroque style, began in 1768 and was completed in 1780.[1] Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, it was consecrated in 1800 by Bishop J. Benislavski.[2] The church was the seat of the bishop of Riga from 1920 to 1924,[3] when the newly promoted archbishop Antonijs Springovičs moved to the Cathedral of St. James in Riga. Springovičs was consecrated bishop there on 22 August 1920 by Kaunas auxiliary bishop Juozapas Skvireckas.[4][5] Every year thousands of pilgrims flock to the Basilica on 15 August, feast day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is one of the eight international shrines recognized by the Holy See[6] and its religious events were attended by around 300,000 pilgrims. In 1980 the Basilica of the Assumption celebrated its 200th anniversary, and Pope John Paul II granted it the title of "Basilica minoris". In September 1993 the same pope visited the basilica. »
