The Feengrotten are a tourist attraction in Saalfeld. The place has a long mining history. When they shut down the mine, the old tunnels were almost forgotten. When they opened the mine to look for other resources they found three chambers which are rich in colours and shapes. In the long period of abandonment, a variety of fantastically shaped stalagmites and stalactites were formed. The most known chamber is called the Fairy Kingdom. There is a short music and light performance in this chamber. The place also holds an museum of the mining history of the grottoes and there is a fairy and nature themed playground which is decorated in lovely detail. It's a nice place for a little day trip with the family. The ticket prices vary due to the different offers. Opening hours are seasonal. The mine can only be entered during a guided tour. I wouldn't recommend the tour through the mine for claustrophobic people because some of the tunnels are - very - narrow and low. And unfortunately it's not barrier-free.
