Reykjadalur

Discovering the Legendary Hvergelmir at the heart of the Reykjadalur geothermal area. Through the winter, bubbling pots give off sulphurous steam in an otherwise snow-covered landscape plunging you deep into Niflheim, a foggy, cold and frosty realm of thé Norse World. At the heart of the icey world of Niflheim lies an immense pool named Hvergelmir. Hvergelmir was poisonous and this poison was all that kept its icey waters from freezing. The waters of Niflheim bubbled over and flowed into 11 rivers. The poison evaporated as the rivers flowed towards the Ginungagap, and as the poison left the water it became toxic mist. Free of poison, the waters froze, gradually filling the void of the Ginnungagap with ice. It was from this ice that the first God was to be born. But that is a tale for another day…. A walk from Hveragerdi to this amazing valley brings you closer to the ancient Norse Gods and to the realm of Niflheim if you make the effort to go in winter. It is a truly magical place.
