Sudeley Castle

Sudeley Castle, is the only private castle in Britain to be the resting place of an English Queen. It started life as a Manor House owned by the Dr Sudeley family. It passed onto the De Tracey family in which one of the owners William De Tracy was one of the knights who murdered and in effect Martyred St Thomas Becket in 1170. The Lords of Sudeley fought for the Black Prince, Henry V and Henry VI in the Hundred Years War. Ralph Boteler built the castle we see today with his spoils from the wars in 1442 but had to relinquish it when he supported Henry VI. It passed to King Edward Iv's brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester (the future Richard III) who swapped it fir Richmond Castle. He reclaimed it when he was King and made some of the great improvements we see today like the banqueting Hall. Henry VIII's 6th wife is buried in the Chapel as she married her love match Sir Thomas Seymour after Henry died. The castle has a rich history and can be visited for an admission fee.
