In the rocky mountains near the town of Bytča, sit the ruins of one of the most inaccessible castles of Považie Region, the Súľov Castle. Cleverly nested between three solid crags, the castle used to be also known as Roháč. There is a legend about a beautiful girl Ľudmila and a cruel local lord nicknamed Čierny Orol (The Black Eagle) who abused Ľudmila. Ľudmila’s father swore revenge on him. Based on the old man’s merits, King Matej granted him the permission to challenge Čierny Orol to a duel. To everyone’s amazement, the hefty lord fell to the hand of Ľudmila’s father. The tyrant’s child, which Ľudmila was pregnant with, was, however, taken good care off – partly thanks to her fiancé. Súľov Castle ruins are one of the stops on the Súľov Rocks National Nature Reserve info trail. This area, rich in a variety of remarkable rock formations, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Slovakia and one definitely worth visiting.
