Sweynes Howes

The remains of a chambered burial cairn. The cairn itself has gone with all that remains being the megalithic capstone and walls of the burial chamber. The name comes from a local legend that the Viking warrior and king, Sweyn (from whom the port of Swansea is said to get its name) was buried here. Access is moderate to hard depending on your level of mobility and fitness. Generally the best way would be to walk up from Rhossili village onto the Rhossili downs, (themselves scattered with the remains of cairns of which the curb stones are easy to spot) and to drop down the other side to Sweynes Howes along a rough footpath. It is easy to see the site from a distance. Prepare for an experience with sweeping views, wild horses and a sense of mystery.
