Humphrey Head

The place where the Last Wolf in England was slain. ? Humphrey Head is a beautiful cliff promontory that juts out into the quicksand of Morecambe Bay. This limestone promontary is a place of ecological interest having lovely limestone pavements and its twisted wind beaten thorn bushes harbour many song birds and butterfly's. It's swampy Beeches are filled with cockles and wetland birds. According to folk ballad it was here that Sir John De Lisle (John Harrington) in desguise rode his white horse over the cliff edge to save his beloved Adele and slay the last wolf. There is an inaccessible cave called Edgar's cave where it said her uncle married the couple by candlelight. Below the cliff is a Holy well said to have healing powers and there is an inscription nearby saying "beware how these rocks you descend, here William Pedder met his end" as a warning to Victorian schoolboys not to risk the climb to Edgar's cave. This is on a public footpath and there is a small stony carpark just below the cliff.
