Kenilworth Castle

A beautiful Lordly castle filled to the brim with history. It was built in 1140 and under the reign of King John was expanded into a mighty royal castle to defend himself against his Barons. These defences were ironically put to the test in the Barons Revolt when Simon De Montfort the Younger held it against the future Edward Ist in the longest recorded siege on English soil. In the Elizabethan period the castle became a true stately Tudir mansion and was the home of the Lord Dudley who is said to have pushed his wife down the stairs to free himself up to marry Queen Elizabeth Ist, who had the sense not to marry him after the controversial death. The castles ruins truly capture the romance of the Middle Ages and are a worthy place to visit by any wanderer fascinated in history. It is owned by English Heritage so can be visited for an admission fee.
