Taeppa's Mound

Anglo-Saxon burial mound. Located behind Taplow Court in a disused Church graveyard is a well-preserved high status Anglo-Saxon burial mound. It is located on a hill overlooking the Thames Valley where there used to be an iron age hillfort. The barrow was excavated in 1883, a high status burial was found with the most extensive treasure hoard ever found to that date. These objects can now be seen in the British museum including the gold and garnet encrusted buckle of the "Taplow Prince" and a pair of silver mounted drinking horns and other amazing treasures: cauldrons, green glass vessels, sword and shield boss, seax knife, cups and playing pieces. It was the second most important burial furnishing after Sutton Hoo. Its a lovely place of peace amongst the often too busy area of Maidenhead and Taplow. It can be found behind Taplow Court. You can find on street parking in Taplow, walk up a little road called Berry Hill where you will see some gorgeous timber framed houses, go through an opening in a Old church wall and you can't miss it sitting amongst the old Victorian gravestones from the church that uses to be here.
