The home of Royalty for under 950 years. This mighty castle almost needs no introduction as it is still a home to the Queen. It is the oldest, longest lived in Royal Castle in the world. It was built by William the Conqueror in roughly 1070-80. The Round Tower is iconic as an internationally recignised landmark. Probably first constructed in the reign of Henry Ist and heightened by George IV. The castle is the founding place of the knights of the Garter, the most prestigious order of chivalry in history, founded in the reign of Edward III. St George's Chapel was originally built by Edward III but also rebuilt by Edward IV. Here lie the remains of some of the most famous Kings and Queens such as Henry VIII, Edward IV and Henry VI. The State apartments remodelled by Charles II are sumptuously decorated by paintings and ornaments such as the Van Duke and Lawrence paintings, the armour of Henry VIII and relics from the Napoleonic wars such as the bullet that killed Lord Nelson.
