The Devil's Den

A Neolithic monument that looks like a dolmen but is actually the remains of an old chambered tomb, similar to the longbarrow at East Kennett. Unfortunately historic ploughing has destroyed the mound and only the entrance portal made up of huge portal stones remain. The dolmen was rebuilt using the sarsens by antiquarians in 1921. Apparently there is a folktales that if you pour water in any of the holes in the sarsens a demon will come at night to lap it up, but apparently this tale is quite recent and may have originated in Victorian or Edwardian times. Thomas Hardy set his shirt story at the Devil's Den called "What the shepherd saw". To get to devil's den I recommend an OS map, there isn't much parking in Fyfield so you may have to find a way there via the Downs. You can get to it via a permissive path. Watch out for bullocks!
