Tinkinswood Burial Chamber

A Cotswold-severn type tomb set in quiet country north from the town of Barry, West from the city of Cardiff and adjacent to Duffryn House. The massive 40 ton capstone is handsome and presents an impressive sight on approach. The mound is quite well preserved and having been excavated and partially restored in 1914 is quite distinct from the surrounding woods. The small woodland around the remains can be quite charming in summer and equally atmospheric in winter. In the summer months expect a pleasant walk through wild flowers and insects in the fields leading to Tinkinswood. In winter expect a bleaker experience, gnarled trees, the remains of prehistoric quarrying amongst the thicket and views south towards the Bristol Channel. It is usually quiet at any time of the year. The site can be accessed easily with a small carpark on Duffryn Ln. The Valeways Heritage Trail also passes in front of the site. Nearby are the remains of St. Lythans burial chamber.
