Willy Howe

A very impressive bronze age barrow on the banks of the Gypsey Race, a Winterbourne stream that may have been considered sacred to prehistoric peoples. It is the largest barrow in the Yorkshire wolds but didnt contain any burial so may have been a cenotaph or monument for other reasons. It has been immortalised in the history books by 12th Century chronicler William of Newborough who recorded a supernatural incident involving a local drunk who stole a magical goblet from a party of fairy folk from the mound. Other local legends include a farmer who found treasure and unsuccessfully unearthed it even with the help of all his plough animals and a ghostly black cat that guards a treasure chest. Today it is on private land but you can access it by parking in a layby down from Wold Newton and walking up track to the model aviation centre, it is opposite the model aeroplane field, you cant miss it.
