Duggleby Howe

A prehistoric burial mound which is one of the largest round barrows in Britain and one of the earliest. May have been built in the late Neolithic to house the burial of a high status individual who was buried with a Towthorpe bowl and flint tools in 4000 BC. The barrow was reused for many burials in the Neolithic then the bronze age. In the iron age 53 cremation urns were deposited into the mound. Eventually the mound was used as a post windmill in the early modern period. The mound was raised nearby a Winterborne stream known as the Gypsey race which may have been considered sacred to prehistoric peoples. The mound is on private land but can be seen from the village.
