Sheriff Hutton Castle

Sheriff Hutton is a beautiful quandrangular castle of the Yorkshire style. It was built by the Neville family a New upcoming noble family who were vying for power as the greatest Northern magnates. The Nevilles lost Sheriff Hutton after their most famous ancestor the Earl of Warwick (Kingmaker) rebelled against Edward IV and was killed at the battle of Barnet. King Edward gave the castle to his brother Richard Duke of Gloucester who became King Richard III. Richard used the castle as his base whilst he was Lord of the North. The castle fell into ruin during the 16th century and is still in quite a bad way listed as dangerous to visit. It is now a romantic ruin covered on ivy, to visit its on private land but there is a footpath to walk around it which affords lovely views of the castle. The landowners go provide private tours for any visitors interested for a small fee.
