Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate.

This ancient Priory was founded as Christ Church and may be as old as the 4th Century, some believe this was where an ancient sister church to the minster was built known as the Alma Sophia. Evidence mainly points ti an important Anglo-Saxon foundation which after the Conquest became a Norman Priory dedicated to the Holy Trinity. You can still see the beautiful Norman pillars from the original Benedictine foundation. The monks working in Holy Trinity's Scriptorium produced a beautiful illuminated bestiary called the "York Bestiary" During the Dissolution the monastery was dissolved but the Parish Church was allowed to continue serving. Inside you can see some amazing carvings and the original stocks, which have give holes because according to legend a man with one leg was said to always resident if the sticks for drunkeness. The church is also said to be haunted by the headless ghost of the Duke of Northumberland.
