Clifton Hall Pele

An interesting Pele tower below Penrith that is managed by English Heritage. It may have been built by Elianor Egaine or her Son in law William Wyburgh as a H plan Manor House. The tower was added later as a display of military status which was in fashion in the 15th century. The tower was ransacked by the Jacobites after the battle of Clifton Moor in 1745. By the Victorian period the Hall became a farm and much of the Manor was demolished except this tower which became a hayloft. You can still see impressive oak doors that were recycled as the floor in the attic.
