Penrith Castle, Cumbria. This imposing castle in the Penrith Town centre was built by Ralph Neville on the 14th Century as the new Neville powerbase grew across Cumberland. After the Earl of Warwick fall after the Battle of Barnet, the once Neville castles in Yorkshire and Cumbria were given to Edward Iv's brother Richard Duke of Gloucester the future Richard III, who made Penrith Castle into a luxurious residence. It is owned by English Heritage but is free to enter.
