This is an exceptional example of a standing building from the Roman era. It is the remains of a bathhouse from the Roman Fort and port of Glanoventa. Glanoventa was an important hub between the 2nd and 4th Centuries for maritime travel and trade helping to support the Cumbrian forts such as Hardknott and Ambleside, there is still much to be discovered by archaeologists. The ruins are the remains of the bathhouse apdyterium where bathers would get changed and leave their clothes in a niche before bathing, exercising or getting their massage.
