Thornborough Henges

One of the most unusual henge complexes in the UK as it comprises of three huge Neolithic embanked henges which are thought to mimick Orions belts. Each henge had a diameter if 240 metres each 550 metres apart, it is so huge is has to be visited in two parts. This overlooked monument was probably as important to ancient man as Avebury, stonehenge and the Ness if Brodgar, but is seldom visited by the wanderer. To visit the two southern henges you must park between the two on a small road leading out of Thirty n Borough. To visit the northernmost henge you must park in West Tanfield and the henge can be located in a small wood, which is particularly magical in Spring when the bluebells are out.
