Ambleside Fort

The low remains of Ambleside Roman Fort. There isn't much to see anymore due to ribbing throughout the centuries but these low walls are the remains of Clanoventa an important Roman base at the top of Lake Windermere and may have controlled the shore market as nd transportation I f supplies over the lake. An alter stone dedicated to a soldier killed by the enemy in the Fort attests to a moment in the Forts history when it was assaulted by rebellious Britons.
