Saint Constantine's Caves

Fascinating rock cut cells out of the Sandstone banks of the River Eden. Legend says these caves were cut out as a hermitage for a Scottish Saint called St Constantine. There is also a legend that King Owain of Rheged took shelter here after being defeated by King Athelstan in the battle of Burnanburgh which saw the Briton Kingdom of Cumbraland absorbed into the Kingdom of England. It is likely that the caves became a storage place for the Priory at Wetheral. You can find it by walking along the footpath in Wetheral woods, you have to find a path that drops towards the river but be careful its easy to miss!
