Wetheral Priory Gatehouse

Wetheral Priory was a small Benedictine cell of St Mary's Abbey, York. It was dissolved in the Dissolution of the Monasteries so now all that remains is the fortified Gatehouse. It would have once had 12 monks and even had a place of Sanctuary for border rivers and outlaws to seek sanctuary from the law. It is looked after by English Heritage but free to enter.
