Beetham Hall

A fantastic 14th Century medieval Hall. This fortified Manor would have once been head of the village of Beetham and was built by the Beetham family a leading gentry family of military knightly class. There are remains of a barmkin wall, a low defensive stone wall used in border castles. There is evidence of a Chapel, a feasting Hall and solar towers (towers used as living quarters) The Beetham supported King Richard III at the battle of Bosworth in 1485 and lost their lands to the Stanley's. Thomas Fairfax besieged the hall in the English Civil war and damaged it in the process. It passed onto the Clifford's and then the Wilsons of Dallam tower. The buildings in front are now used as a crematorium but the owners seem quite receptive to visitors, even leaving interpretation boards for visitors.
